The Gambit team was victorious in the Luxembourg Rapid Team Chess Championship, organised by TSM Schëffleng, which took place on 1 December.

In this 13-team event, the Gambit team – comprising, in each round, four of the five-player squad of Stefan Maltezeanu, Óskar Bjarnason, Jan Bednarich, Geoff Stern and Dans Vijups – won all its matches, but faced its chief rivals in rounds 3 and 4. In round 3, Differdange were defeated 2.5-1.5 in a tight match, victory finally being secured when Stefan overcame International Master Mietek Bakalarz in an endgame. Then, in round 4, the pre-tournament favourites, Belvaux, were decisively defeated, with convincing wins from Stefan (against International Master Tom Weber), Óskar and Dans.

Battles on the chessboard in the town of Cervantes’s captivity

The European Chess Club Cup 2019, Ulcinj, Montenegro, 9-16 November, has been dominated by Obiettivo Rinascimento Padova from Italy (GMs Rapport, Adams, Lekó, Vallejo Pons, Šarić, Vocaturo, Brunello, rating average: 2686), ahead of Nový Bor from the Czech Republic and Mednyi Vsadnik from Russia.

The Champions league of chess saw Gambit score in line with expectations, prevailing on the squads from Turkey and Ireland and missing a deserved victory in the last round, which would have propelled our club higher in the final standings. The best representatives from Luxembourg were De Sprenger Echternach on place 33. In the women section, Nona from Georgia (GM Dzagnidze, IM Javakhishvili, GM Batsiashvili, GM Khotenashvili, IM Melia)  clinched the title, with Kyiv Chess Federation from Ukraine and Cercle d’Échecs Monte Carlo on the second and third place, respectively.

Gambits at lightning speed

Our players have won their second national Blitz Chess title in a row, emerging clear first ahead of Differdange and Bieles after 18 rounds of 3’ per player games with 2’’ increment. The tournament organised by CE Philidor Beggen offered a number of though battles among the participating teams.

Gambit I (Steve Dishman, Slobodan Filipović, Óskar Bjarnason, Zoran Stanić) started as rating favourites and successfully defended their Luxembourg champions title by winning 15 matches, drawing 2 and losing 1.

Luxembourg Chess League 2017/18: An end-of-season balance

The Luxembourg Chess League 2017/18 is over, with a final round on 25 March in Differdange which brought together all the participating teams for a colourful gran finale (RTL).

The balance for Gambit teams is mixed.  Despite a fierce fight, Gambit Bonnevoie I was not able to defend our Luxembourg champions title, which returned to the Echternach team of the Luxembourg all-time-best GM Alberto David and chess legend GM Robert Hübner. Congratulations to Echternach for dominating this season!  The clear second place gained by our players ahead of Dudelange qualifies us for the European Chess Club Cup in Porto Carras (Greece) later this year.

Gambit II had to admit the superiority of Differdange II and finished third in the Promotion d’honneur, missing the chance of promotion to the highest division. Our players could not overcome the merciless laws of statistics reflected in an average Elo difference of 180 points.

The other Gambit teams gained significant experience for the next season, with our young players making good progress and putting into practice what they have learned so far.
